tedvid revamp comencement

by Ted
December 20th, 2009

One of my goals for Christmas break was to really begin to understand web design and creation. My thought processes have led me to think it is most wise to allow tedvid.com to be the guinea pig (boy do I despise overused phrases, but sometimes nothing else fits) of my testing and development. This means that if you come back to the site soon and it isn’t working, or the header is floating in the middle of the page, or even if it looks plain awesome, that I hope you continue to come back to check it out.

That being said, I have decided to install a second WordPress directory at tedvid.com/video. Why, you ask? Well I have an idea in my head of how I want it to look and work, and I figured that it would be best if it were left independent of the navigation already in place. I plan to post all of the videos I produce/edit/direct/etc. there, and hopefully that allows a clean atmosphere in which to view my videos (I guess this only applies if you find what I create entertaining in the slightest). It already exists and can be viewed by clicking this made up word: youareawesome. It is currently semi-based on a concept a friend of mine, Brad Ulrich, has implemented into a subdirectory of his site called adbrad.com/snacks which he calls a “bite-sized” version of his blog, but applied to just my created video.

I also have to say, that after tinkering a little with the Builder Theme from Ithemes, I feel as if I have a lot more control and knowledge over web design than I really do. This could be dangerous.

Alright, enough with the blog post writing.. I’m off to go write a script for a video that I can put over at tedvid.com/video.

Spartacus / Sony HVR-A1U test footage

by Ted
December 18th, 2009

I got my new High Definition Camcorder in today and so naturally I shot some test footage using the family
English Bulldog, Spartacus, as the subject! Loving this camera, I will probably post a review over it soon.

*Note: my compression settings still need some tweaking.

Avatar – The Dream I Never Had

by Ted
December 18th, 2009

Na'viThis “movie review” is coming from someone who has absolutely no authority whatsoever to critique or analyze a movie, I am simply a movie-lover, in college, studying film, who hoped Avatar might be like it was cracked up to be.

People who know I was one of the nerds who waited up until midnight to then watch a 2 hour and 40 minute movie, have pestered me with questions, asking what the movie is like and the best answer I can come up with is as follows:

You know that dream you always wish you could have had when you were a kid? The one where you hit your pillow and find yourself to be 10 feet tall, a different color, you can jump higher and run faster, you can connect with animals and then ride them, then plants interact with you, and you made friends and then got to fight something? – Well maybe that wish was just mine… but that was Avatar.

Before I get any further, I have to suggest to you (yeah you, the person reading this right now) to see it in 3D – the 3D experience in this movie is comparable to the first time you happened to see High Definition TV after years of standard definition.

The 3D takes a solid 15 minutes to let your eyes and brain adjust to it. In real life you get to choose what to focus on in your own 3D environment but in the movie the focus is done for you, so it isn’t until you sort of “give up control” of your eyes’ depth of focus that you begin to feel like you are the camera and you get to fully take in the new world James Cameron created.

The only downside to the movie is the unabashedly political undertone in which Cameron and his team entirely oversimplify the War in Iraq that he obviously criticizes throughout the film. If the circumstances in Iraq were the same as they are in the human’s assault on the Na’vi in Avatar, then even the farthest right wing conservative would be in agreement on who the protagonists are (Jake Sully and the Na’vi) and who antagonists are (us greedy humans). This however does not inhibit the story-line which is good enough to stand alone (without the special effects, I mean) and only further proves Cameron can simply make a good movie.

All in all, I was blown away. I began to halt my anticipation a couple of days prior to the movie’s release just in case it was a huge flop as some had anticipated, but I do not see any glaring signs of a budding box office dud. It’s one of those movies that people will talk about and refer to for quite sometime and you will find yourself the outsider if you have not seen it.

Go see it, and be prepared to suspend reality – a lot.

Semester Number Three

by Ted
December 16th, 2009

Is over! I am now officially a Junior in college.

Honestly, this semester of college was probably the most difficult semester of school I have ever had. Oddly enough, it was not because the courses were difficult, or that the workload was astronomical, it was just simply hard to stay motivated.

Hard to stay motivated because I’m ready to begin doing what I’m going to do with my life.

Now, that may be a bit ridiculous considering I honestly have no idea what I’m going to do with my life, but I can almost guarantee you that my career will not involve things like Geology. Anyway, I’m hoping to process all of what happened this past semester (including the transition from one website to five) while also doing a lot of self-teaching and experimentation with web code/design and video over this Christmas break. I just purchased a Sony HVR A1U that should arrive soon and I’m currently writing a 3-5 minute short mockumentary to produce before my break is over – you will probably see more about that than you can handle over the next couple of weeks. Also, I am going to be doing some speaking and promoting of Heavyladen.org (you should definitely click and check it out) while also working on the site itself over this break.

Now that I look at that, I wonder when I’ll do my reflecting.

“Have mercy on me oh God – according to Your unfailing love – according to Your great compassion – blot out my transgression”

Asking that daily ^^

Beards – Love Them or Hate Them?

by Ted
December 16th, 2009

I made a pact with myself two and a half weeks ago that I would keep a beard until finals are over.

I did not know where this would lead.

The results are in the picture below.

(note: I did allow my self to shave the “neard” (neck beard) because it gets so ridiculously itchy)

Biz Markie’d – The New Rick Roll’d

by Ted
December 15th, 2009

I am firmly convinced that this should be the replacement to the classic Rick Astley music video when wanting to make people think you’re actually giving them something funny/interesting to look at.
